A Brief History of Advances in Thalassemia Treatment – Chapter 3

In this third stage of our historical journey, we explore the period when oral chelation therapies became available, offering patients a more practical and less invasive alternative to subcutaneous treatment. This era also marks the beginning of innovative cellular approaches to thalassemia therapy, laying the groundwork for future advances toward a definitive cure.

This chapter is part of a broader narrative that traces 150 years of progress in thalassemia care, divided into four key periods:

  • Chapter 1: The Era of Disease Discovery (1739–1962)

  • Chapter 2: The Era of Subcutaneous Chelation and the DNA Diagnostic Revolution

  • Chapter 3: The Era of Oral Chelation and Cellular Approaches to Thalassemia Therapy

  • Chapter 4: The Era of Advanced Therapies for Thalassemia Cure

Although this division is partly arbitrary, it follows the historical introduction of iron chelators—cornerstones of thalassemia treatment—up until the expiration of the deferasirox patent.

We hope you will find this journey both engaging and insightful. If you have additional information or interesting anecdotes to share, please write to garden.network@fondazionecutino.it. We would be delighted to enrich our collective history with your contributions.

Happy reading,
Aurelio Maggio
